Catholic Chapel to close Print E-mail

Chapel of the AnnunciationDespite a regular attendance of twenty people it has been planned to close the Chapel

Over 60 years ago the Chapel situated in a barn at Tinkers Hill, Furneux Pelham was established by the Lake family and is beautifully decorated by carvings from Catholic prisoners of war held in Hadham Hall.  By the end of July 2013 the Chapel of the Annuciation (Catholic) will be closed.

The decision has been taken because of several factors including:

  • Costly repairs needed to maintain the Chapel Building
  • Shortage of ordained clergy
  • The 'moral' issue of taking or "poaching" potential attendees from other local Catholic churches in the diocese
This seems such a shame especially as local people are regularly attending and that Mass held at 6pm on Saturday evenings is led by the particularly 'live wire' Father Richard from Thaxted.
